Okukinu Onsen in snow and snowshoeing
From Thursday, 11 February 2010
To Saturday, 13 February 2010
by adminHits : 419

Amazing scenery... lots of snow Thursday evening (15cm new) and Friday but only just below zero. Cold and clear Friday night but more snow again Saturday. Onsen in the snow was really good... pity I accidentally formated camera card on the train - will try and find out how to recover, if possible.

Sad note; Chibi Kun, the guide dog at Hatcho died March 2009.

Feb 11-13 Okukinu Onsen in Snow
One of my favourite baths in Japan... outside in the snow with wild animals running past the bath at night.
Camp in snow free or stay room - always space but Kani-yu is about 7,000+ for room and meals; Hatcho-no-yu 9,000-11,000en for room and food.
If no equipment - dont worry, they will pick you up in lodge mini bus. Call on the train to reserve! You can walk between onsen but off the forest road boots needed and maybe snowshoes.

I always take a bath at Hatcho-no-yu. 500en they let us in many times and all night.
There are about 6 or 7 ryokan with baths in the forest so lots of choice. We will snowshoe in the valley Friday - maybe they can be rented from lodges.

Access
Thursday 1100 limited express Tobu train from Tobu Asakusa station to Kinugawa Onsen and then bus 1315 to Mie-oto-buchi onsen. 2,900en single on train.
Lodge bus free or hike 50 minutes from there.

Sorry, but I don't have the equipment or the experience for this level of event. So I can confirm that Dean won't be driving to Oze or Okukinu this weekend.

If I dont go there you can always hook up with Yuki and her OCJ group... about 6+ people I think

For the 2-day trip, I think the more accessible option would be better - Kusatsu/Gunma area (about 3.5 hours by car) for snow shoe hiking.
