Title and Date [タイトル, 日付]:  Shiroumadake (Hakuba) Climb and Yarionsen Camp-August 13-15, 2012

Note-possibly will change to the 14th-16th

Location [場所]: Nagano

Event Grade [イベント等級]: Fitness 2-3, Technical 2-3, depending on if you climb or not

Event Details [イベント詳細], Route and Time [ルートと時間]

I am considering 2 options:

Option one:

We will hike about 4.5  hours from the car to Yarionsen, at the base of Shiroumadake. This is the 2nd highest rotenburo in Japan, at 2100m. 1st day, will relax in the onsen and do light walking in the area.

2nd day, will climb to the ridge in about 2.5 hours, if ambitious and the weather is good, can climb Shiroumadake. It is a Technical 3, Fitness 4 if we go all the way to Shirouma (10-12 hours round trip). I would prefer though, to do an easier 5-6 hour walk to the ridge, enjoy the mountain scenery, and return to camp, enjoy the onsen.

3rd day, return to car, and visit 1-2 more nice onsen (either natural or traditional, konyoku, rotenburo). I always find good ones, ask the other members! Bring towel or swimsuit if you are shy, all of these are konyoku's, clothing optional.

I will not change the destination unless there is a typhoon!

If you don't want to camp, it's possible to stay in the yamagoya for 6300 yen without food, but you'd better call them and reserve, it's Obon!

You should be in good physical condition, good balance, have some experience on chains and ladders, and have proper equipment.  If you don't have a tent, someone may have space. This will be a fairly relaxing trip, not too technical, maybe a few chains or ladders though.

Option 2:

Another member has suggested the Daisekkei route, Would hike with full overnight packs about 5.5 hours map time to a campsite near the top of Shirouma. Will probably be some snow so you need hiking poles, maybe 4 point eisen. Second day, climb Shirouma, go south on the ridge, and descend to Yarionsen at 2000m. 3rd day, return to car after relaxing in onsen, and visit 1-2 more onsens in the area. Have found some wild ones that I want to check out.

Description of this route with good photos is at http://touzainanboku267.blog19.fc2.com/blog-entry-343.html

I prefer Option 1, but can be convinced to do #2 if enough people are interested.

The main hiking day will be the 2nd, depending upon the level of people, hopefully we can get up early, do a longer hike to the summit of Shiroumadake. You're a runner, have some chain experience, should be no problem for you. Even if we only do ridge walking, if the weather cooperates will be great alpine views.

The ridge doesn't have any chains to Shirouma from there. I remember it being quite easy on the top. There are chains and ladders to the south - Karamatsu direction.
Going up to the top ridge is quite steep.

It is a long way to Shirouma and back... even without packs.
Club questions go in the 'Contact Us' section. Event questions in the website topic for the event... unless I say call or email me.

Dave, would you consider going up from the parking lot thru' the snow valley (Daisekkei); stay 1 night at the top then come down via the ridge & stay 1 night at Yari Onsen and then go back.

That's possible, just a lot of cimbing with excess weight-I will be slower.

But looks interesting, map says there's a campground and water available.

Tomoko, do you have some experience in chains and ladders? If we go south from Shirouma, may be a bit technical.
