UPDATES [更新]:
1. Train time included now - see travel details.

2. Shock! Weather now bright and sunny for Okutama until 6pm - can't believe it.
http://tenki.jp/forecast/point-733.html

3. If good weather we might change to more interesting route but same area - will decide on arrival at Okutama.

People so far ... Andy, Lee, Viviana, Yutaka,  Kiki,

It is possible to attend as a river hike but you will have to walk around waterfalls... not for beginners - intermediate hikers who can climb up steep places with no path. A slip would be dangerous.

Title & Date [タイトル, 日付]: Monday 17th: Okutama sawanobori (奥多摩 沢登り - シダクラ沢)

Location [場所]: 1 hr 15 minutes from Tokyo.

Event Grade [イベント等級]:
Fitness 1 easy, Technical 2-3 ... climbing small waterfalls - not vertical but could be 5-7m high. Safety rope if needed.
Beginner ok with gear if you like climbing rocks and have reasonable balance.

Sawanobori is fitness 1 but getting out of the valley to the ridge makes it Fitness 2.

Event Details [イベント詳細], Route & Time [ルートと時間]
Sawanobori - climbing streams and waterfalls - great fun and addictive. Most waterfalls are not high so quite safe. We carry safety rope anyway.
If good weather the water is a beautiful colour and  river valley bright green - lots of moss. It can be cold so sawanobori is usually only 3-4 hours. Depending on the route some shorts swims are necessary in pools - wonderful!
I will decide route after seeing the weather in Okutama. It will be a Nippara area one like Kurasawa valley or upper Kawanori. If not good weather then a side river o n the way to Okutama dam - less water and more hiking up.

This is probably our route if cloudy weather:

Ok, we can try sawanobori Monday. There will be rain - lunchtime probably. One route Im thinking of should be ok if raining.

You MUST have a helmet. Even DIY store type ok. They are 980yen - I saw in Unidy and Workman.
You also need waraji or sawanobori boots.

Bring harness if you have one but maybe you can use sling (from me) if you don't have one.

Look at August messages for sawanobori - previous events or calendar.

Quite a little adventure... hope we get some pics this week.
With people missing the bus, waiting for the next one and then lost shoes down the river we were behind schedule.
It didnt seem such a big problem at the time but later...

Sawanobori was just as expected from the websites about it with some long but not too steep waterfalls. Not much swimming but a nice route suitable for beginners if a rope is used a few times.
It isnt a typical sawanobori route where you walk back down the road beside the river. This one you have to hike up to the ridge then down the path to Okutama dam. There is no trail to the ridge and with the rain it was turning into soft mud in places. People were a bit slow and nervous off trail, and it was (felt) much longer uphill to the ridge from the end of the river than expected. Finally everyone was at the top and we had to try and do as much as possible before dark.  Most of the path was very good but not everyone had headlight ...tut tut  :-X

There were a lot of bumps in the night going down as people slipped on the wet roots and clay. Certainly more than 30.
The lights at the dam seemed so close but the path wasn't letting us escape so easily - steep and slow. Lots of gasps and sighs. A new member on her first OCJ event had a special initiation survival trip.

Halfway across the dam I spotted a bus approaching in the distance - classical run for the bus after a long long day. We made it ... it was 8pm.
The bus driver said it was the drop off point so we had to go to the boarding bus stop in case there was a queue!! Frantically running around wondering where it was we then chased the bus. It was just in front about 50m away and of course, at that time there was nobody waiting.
Tap water shower outside the station and we were clean and comfortable on the train home...

It was good trip. I would rank it as a 3rd class, (maybe just 2nd class - no, I take that back... 3rd class) unforgettable event. Tsurugi 2007 was a first class unforgettable event - much talked over at every meeting a for over a year after.
http://outdoorclubtokyo.com/gallery/index.php/071006tsurugidake

After no sleep the night before and just making the supermarket before closing time, I had my dinner and got ready for bed. Still sweating after house jobs and a shower I decided to lay on the futon with aircon for 10 mins to cool and dry off. I woke up 3 hours later with the light on and mosquito bits in the most unusual places.
And happy to say, only a little stiff this morning - it wasn't so tough after all!

This sawanobori was awesome!

I think kiki was great. No one expected that in the first time and she made it!
And for me, that was legendary!
But it was tough for me, I feel pain in my whole body today…

Without the lights, we might have to stay there until sunrise.
Thank you Viviana and Lee.

In addition, someone could not join the event, so we have to go sawanobori again soon! right Andy?
(Good for you,Andy.  You could eat meats yesterday.)

I'm uploading pictures...

We would have got down ok... taxi back to Okutama though. But now Im sure everyone will carry LED headlights  :P

Glad both of you uploaded photos - great to see. Though I will never forget the trip, pics are really nice to have...

Kiki was great - first OCJ trip like army boot camp but she didn't complain

Trips that get delayed or unforeseen trail trouble happen once a year or so. It happens - that's life, but a point for organizers that in a club you have to be prepared for things like this in a group. People late, lost shoes, fun climbing waterfalls, tough hill in the rain and mud, people without headlights.

Allow extra time - don't overdo it. You can't leave people behind so as long as people get home safely (hopefully the same day) and it happens once a year - ok. Great memory.
