Title: Sept 17,18,19: North Alps Yarigatake

3 day weekend makes this an easy trip - no rush.
Beginners can  enjoy the valley and camp. The hike up is easy intermediate level and views are spectacular from the 3,000m ridge. Only the last 25 minutes climb of the rock peak is harder with chains (for experienced people only).

You can google 'yarigatake and Kamikochi valley'.

Saturday
Early  azusa train  to Matsumoto. Bus from there to Kamikochichi Alps center.
Walk down the valley and camp (3-5 hours walk). Furthest spot is the best.

Sunday
Hike up Yarigatake to lodge. Views are good.
Experienced people ok climbing rock and chains can try th peak (extra 20 mins) if queue is not too long.
Go back down to campsite. Whole day is about 6-7 hours round trip. Plus breaks ans waiting time at top.

Relax at campsite.

Monday
Walk back to bus station about 4.5 hours and return home.

Saturday  train from Shinjuku to Matsumoto.

Many buses to Kamikochi but using morning train looks like 1055am.
http://www.alpico.co.jp/access/kamikochi/shinshimashima/

You need to check bus times yourself (someone needs to phone them) and decide which train. Maybe 7-8am is ok for 1055 bus to KAmikochi (if timetable correct)

Arrive Kamikochi at 12 noon and must start walking down the valley. Easy forest road with lots of food and drink places along the way.

Kamikochi - Campsite

1. The first campsite is at the turning/river crossing for Karasawa (not recommended but ok). Only about 3 hours walk - flat valley nearly.
Grass area and free I think but very crowded.

2. Better place is another 2 hours along the valley. Just past the last campsite (yarisawa camp) you can camp on sand by river (free). Dont stop at the Yarisawa campsite area!
Night sky and valley view is very good here. If walking in afternoon you can reach this.

Next day you hike up Yarigatake without large pack and return to tents. Relax for 1 more night and go home next day.
About 3.5 hours up and then 2.5 hours down back to camp spot.

If driving at night its possible to go and camp in the valley. Dont think enough time to hike the valley and climb Yari.

What you could do though is camp in the same place as the others at the end of the valley and take the path to the top of the ridge between Yarigatake and Nishidake. Great views from there and the path is  quite easy. Just go up and down.
Or go up the Karasawa valley if feeling fit - simple path.

Thinking of joining your group, but I have to make a 4pm flight out of Narita on Monday.  Just in Tokyo for this week.  Will need to get the morning bus out of Kamikochi to Matsumoto on Monday.  Also thinking of just doing an up and back to Hodakadake through Karasawa.

If the weather is not so good I recommend changing to Karasawa valley before Yarigatake. Its an easy hike and the best scenery (better than Yari).

If people still want to go then please reply here and make your own meeting time - check the bus time too from Matsumoto.

I'm heading up tomorrow afternoon and will try to camp at Yokoo. Will most likely try to run up Karasawa and maybe Hodaka on Sat if the rains don't push me back, and then out on Sunday.
