Thanks for posting Nozomi. Would love join. :)

Hello,

I would like to join, but do not have a tent, and do not know if I can get one in time.

If anyone is willing to share or knows if there will be tents for rent, please let me know.

I will make sure to research and purchase a good tent for the next trip.

Thank you!

Another option is to stay at Kumotori Lodge where we are camping. They provide Japanese style bed, futon, so you don't have to bring sleeping bag. The cost is 5,300yen per night. Reservation is required. Let me know if you need help.

There is a free lodge at Kumotori as well - basic shelter but last time I saw it was in very good condition - no reservation so you sleep with others that arrive. If not raining you can sleep outside  with sleeping bag.

Search google for  kumotori san mujin koya ( 雲取避難小屋 ):

Also, a highly recommended route is from Mitsumine shrine to the north. Seibu train to Mitsumineguchi (holiday kaisoku) then bus up the mountain to shrine.
As you are already high up it is easier but this is a beautiful alpine forest  route along the ridge - better scenery than from Okutama and it is a very easy route. Some large pine trees in forest of thick moss on the way. Sunday there are many route options down to Okutama.

Map attached - shows 2 free lodges.

Thank you Nozomi and Andy for the information!

I was actually able to speak to a friend and borrow a tent for that weekend.

Please count me in for this trip!

On Oct 1st, there will be an event at Mitsumine shrine and bus from Mitsumine-guchi will only take us to heliport. From the heliport, we have to walk 2km to Mitsumine shrine. There will be many people and bus will be crowded, too.
Let's keep on checking the weather. If we go on Oct 1st, I think it is better to take the route from Okutama.
If we need to postpone due to bad weather, let's think about changing to the route from Mitsumine shrine.

Thank you Andy for the advice and the map :)

On the homepage it looks like the bus stops at  Mitsumine-iriguchi (the bus timetable difference is 2 minutes). Also that is good as you are not  walking to the shrine ... you go to Kumatori (oppposite way) so you save time.

Its a good way to go because the bus climbs the mountain to over 1,000m saving steep uphill climbing time (about 1.5 hours or more). Also the views and forest will be better as you spend more time walking at higher location.
But it is up to you - not my trip, just my advice.

For Saturday, we will take the route from Mitsumine shrine. We will meet at Seibu Chichibu station instead of Okutama station.

Maps and weather forecast.

The weather looks good now (Wednesday 12pm forecasts).

Check these on Thursday/ Friday

Some more maps.....

It is very easy to find the path to Kumotori from the Mitsumine visitor center and museum. Too easy!

The visitor center will have maps too.

Attched ae some maps scans.

Also JP government map - shows a lot of detail but not map time etc.

http://maps.gsi.go.jp/#16/35.921734/138.934135/&base=std&ls=std&disp=1&vs=c1j0l0u0f0

There are lots of friendly deer on the trail and there is 1 water place on the way.
It will take about 6 hours (easy - not steep but a bit more time with breaks)  to Kumatori  lodge and it is a very safe path.

Andy, Thank you for posting more maps.
Weather forecast for Saturday, the 1st is 70% chances of rain.
Will decide on Friday if we should postpone the event.

I explained most by email but best for other people too.

70% rain - correct!

Rain between 9am and 6pm = almost nothing.

Good to go by this forecast. Views on Sunday will be very good.
Wait until Friday 3pm and check again, but look  at the detail to see how much rain and what time during the day. If all the rain is before 6am or 9am then no problem.

If the forecast is similar, I would go. Most of the hike is in forest so not a problem. A bit of rain sometimes and cloudy.
Sunday is very good weather and you will be at the top.

Weather forecast for Saturday is 9-12am 1mm rain, cloudy in the afternoon.
Sunday is cloudy.
I guess we can go as scheduled.
See you at the exit of Seibu Chichibu Station!
