Title & Date [タイトル, 日付]: Easy Hike, Autumn Colors, Sake Brewery, Art Museum

Location [場所]: Mitake River Gorge

Update:

Event Grade [イベント等級]: 0.5

Introduction [はじめに]

The Mitake River Gorge is one of the best places near Tokyo to see autumn leaves.  We will take a 45 minute (4km) walk on a flat, easy course following the Tama River.  Along the way we'll see beautiful leaves, an art musuem, a historic shrine and stop for lunch at an outdoor cafe run by a sake and beer brewery.  After, people may visit a nearby hair ornament museum or walk some more if they wish.

Event Details [イベント詳細]

We'll leave the train at Mitake and walk about 5 minutes to the Gyokudo Museum.  The museum shows paintings by Gyokudo Kawai (1873 - 1957) who is known for his beautiful nihonga style landscapes.  After visiting the museum and it's beautiful zen rock garden, we'll walk along the Tama river for about 40 minutes admiring the autumn leaves, which should be near peak viewing time.  At the end of our walk we'll stop at an outdoor cafe on the banks of the Tama that is operated by Ozawa Shuzo.  They are most famous for their Sawanoi sake and they also make tasty beers!

After lunch or after the tour, people can get on the train at Sawai and head back home.  For people who are interested in a longer day, just across the river there is a small temple (Kanzanji) and about 5 minutes past that is the Sawanoi Museum, which displays traditional hair ornaments.

Things to Bring [持参するもの]

The weather forecast right now says partly cloudy and 15 C.  We will be eating outside near the river, so be sure to dress warmly.  Bring rain jacket in case of rain. Bring money for trains, food, museum fees, etc.  No special gear is required.

Travel Details, Meeting Time & Place [[旅行の詳細, 集合時間と場所]

With a small stove and a pot, hot spiced wine is great for this trip by the river.  Even if a bit wet it is still a good trip.

Most important things are; sugar, oranges, lemon, cloves, cinamon. The rest are optional.
The large PET bottles (1.5+L) of cheap wine are good for this - darker red best. For 3-4 people you will need at least 1 large PET bottle - it goes very quickly. Usually we use 2 large bottles for about 4-5 people... you will be surprised.

Recipe

Mulled - hot spiced wine  (for 1.4 L)

    2 clementines or oranges

    1 lemon

    1 lime (optional)

    200 g sugar

    6 whole cloves

    1 stick cinnamon

    2 fresh bay leaves (optional)

1 vanilla pod, halved length-ways (optional)

Handful of raisins are nice too, also sliced apple - can eat after drinking.

Method

Peel large sections from your clementines, lemon and lime - avoid white pith if possible
Put the sugar in a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the pieces of peel and squeeze in the clementine juice.
Add the cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaves and about 10 to 12 gratings of nutmeg.
Throw in your halved vanilla pod and stir in JUST ENOUGH wine (!!! not all the wine!) to cover the sugar - a little wine only!

Simmer until the sugar has completely dissolved into the red wine and then bring to the boil.
Keep boiling for about 4 to 5 minutes or until thick.
The reason I'm doing this first is to create a wonderful flavour by really getting the sugar and spices to blend well with the wine.

When ready, turn the heat down to low and the rest of the wine.
Gently heat the wine and after around 5 minutes, when it's warm and delicious...drink. Do not boil!

Weather (looks like a few showers and very small amount of rain)

Yes it is going to rain... but if you look it says scattered showers and 1mm rain/hour - that's a very small/tiny amount.

Wear a raincoat or take an umbrella.

As I always used to say, the colour of the leaves is much better when wet!  ;)

9pm Japan time.

The forecast was just updated 9pm - showing no rain... well less than 1mm!!!
