Activities
Navigation
Meet other members - it is a social night.
Talk about upcoming events and gear.
Navigation and Maps
Projections, scales, distances, grid system, magnetic, true, and grid north, reading contours, ground and slope features, map features.
Setting the map, using bearings.
Hiking routes and calculating travel time. Selecting routes depending on terrain.
Navigation strategies (many!)
Japanese survey maps and commercial hiking map symbols and route information.
Basic equipment needed.
These techniques will be used later and developed more in practise sessions outdoors and in the mountains.
There will also be information about events in April and Golden Week.
Sign Up Conditions
Just reply to this post using the button below. Please post a reply ASAP if you cannot attend near the date - might be lots of map copies.
Things to Bring (持参もの)
For navigation you should have a compass but optional for this session. Paper and pen / pencil needed. A measuring ruler (cm,mm) if no compass with romer scales.
You can read and see some recommended compasses here:
viewtopic.php?t=3955
Meeting Time & Place (集合時間と場所)
From 7pm if some interested in talking about future trips.
Most people cannot arrive early so the likely start time is 7.30pm for the navigation. I will try and keep it to 90 minutes then there is time for free chat.
Place is to be confirmed during the week before the event. Hopefully at the workers welfare centre in Shibuya or other public office room. Backup will be a bar in Akihabara with large tables (Hub probably). Could also do the navigation at an observation deck in Tokyo.
Cost
Depends on the room cost, number of people, map purchases, and colour copies. Also travel to pay the room cost and fill in forms in advance. It might be hard to make it less than 2,000yen. If a workers welfare centre room you can bring in drinks and food so much cheaper than using a bar.

There will be some discussion about typical Japanese hiking map details and symbols for foreign people who might have problems reading them. Also Japanese survey map symbols even Japanese people might have problems with.
