Autumn 2023 Events: October - December

Post by Andy OCJ »

I will be planning weekly events from October to December 2023.

Fri 13th October - OCJ Social Night - Bar or rental room in Tokyo
If in a room we can do a navigation learning session to prepare for outdoor ones later.

Oct 14,15th or 21,22nd...

Okukinu Wild hot spring in the forest with peak autumn colours. Camp free by river and make our own hot spring bath. Great spot for star gazing as well.
Some pics:

Friday Night - Riverside Navigation Training 1

Oct 21,22nd or 28,29th...
Nikko, Ashio area or maybe around Tanigawadake

Hike and wild camp with autumn colours.

Pages either side of this one have some trips around the 20th to 25th:

Ashio valley (not autumn though):

Nov 4,5th

Great government campsites in Okutama and Gumna with special red maple and tanuki
. Okutama site has some rental tents etc but space fills up very early so reliable booking needed in October.
There will be more trips in Gunma and Okutama after that.

Mountain Navigation session.

Maybe Izu island hot spring weekend before the camping season there ends. 3 days best.

Late November - December
Chiba natural river tunnels and special hiking. There is a good government campsite there with cheap lodges but 1 day is possible.

Late December
Shiriyake Hot River Onsen
Great place with a bit of snow hopefully. We have a secret sleeping spot (sleeping bag for -10C needed). You can swim in a hot section of river - almost emerald green in places - and free.

Some navigation sessions in Tokyo in a room, by a large open space near river, and finally in the mountains. Also be some sessions for emergency rope use and other mountain walking topics.

More details later. If interested please reply to this post.

I hope to be there as planned but departure delays are more likely now as my mum was in hospital 3 times the last month. Actually due for discharge in the next 2-3 days but I am not sure how long recovery will take or to what level she will reach. Chest infection complicated by COPD. She was doing fairly active gardening previously but might not recover the same lung function as before.

Will keep you updated. If not middle of October it could be a couple of weeks later.

Unfortunately due to my mum's ill health and other house construction maintenance problems I will have to delay my trip to Japan. Some time in November or December still possible if the situation improves.

Volunteer needed for this weekend (14th) or next weekend (21st) to lead a group to wild hot spring in Okukinu.

Meet people , guide along the route, collect the club event donation and send via PayPal.
This weekend good weather and colours good above the hot spring. Will be cold at night but free hot bath. Sleeping bag needed for 5C with camping gear and food.

I can give route map and details for volunteer leader. One rain damaged spot on the trail that care is needed. Ok for experienced hikers but best with 10m of cheap rope to protect. Otherwise an easy hike with stream crossing in 4 places (sandals best).
It is a great trip.

Mum in hospital for the 6th time ( CO2 retention and Pneumonia after that in hospital ) - hopefully to rehab and out before Christmas. Looks very very unlikely I will get to Japan soon as I will be the main carer.
Because of bad Kafunshou I would also be limited to the beginning of February so my next chance looks like April.... a year from my last plan demolished by an Achilles tendon rupture. She should be more mobile and independent by then if things go well.

If possible I will be there but planning is impossible at the moment. Still in hospital as infections there spread easily. Hopefully she will be home in a week or so which might result in fewer infections.

Will post when I can start planning.

There is a great trip for people interested in a hot river onsen. There is an unofficial place to stay out nearby if people have a sleeping bag for -10C with mat, sheet, proper outdoor winter clothing. Alternative is a taxi share to Kusatsu nearby to find cheap room and try the many free hot springs around town. Snow shoeing is also good there with the cable car to the top.

Hi Andy,

Just joined OCJ! I’ve just moved to Tokyo from Bristol in the UK. Love the outdoors and been looking for a camp to do soon, so this hot river expedition sounds amazing. Super keen whenever you begin to plan this some more.

Thanks,
Will

The hot river event will soon be past it's hot date as the temperature rises and the snow melts. Nobody stepping up to lead the trip either (I can provide most details).
I am in the UK dealing with a funeral now so I cannot do events. Even end of April looks unlikely dealing with property etc. Would be nice to get there for May but I think my next chance will be autumn - rainy season and summer are pretty bad in Japan.
