I went to this place 2 weeks ago as a volunteer and will go back again from 10th night to 12th night of June. It's very easy place to work. So far, my 3 friends join me. We can go there by public transportation and rent-a-car, but now car #1 (I, 3 my friends and Yves are counted) is already full. If we can find other drivers, other people can join. This is social event and anyone can join.
<Cost>
-transportation, accomodation and food
We go there by public transportation and rent-a-car, the cost will be around 15,000yen excluding gear. Accomodation and food are free in the volunteer center, but it's better to donate some money. You can stay at camping site or shelter (shelter is mainly for women). If you have a sleeping bag, it's better to bring. You can rent a tent.
-volunteer insurance
600, 1000 or 1400 yen depending on amount of coverage. We can apply together. You don't need to do that by yourself.
-gear
It's depending on what you buy and the quality, but roughly 5,000 - 10,000yen. You can rent gear except working cloths, but I can't garantee that all items and all size are available, especially over 28cm and under 24cm boots. Standard gear are as follows.
*helmet
*goggles (to avoid your eyes from dust)
*mask (to avoid you from dust and smell)
*leather groves and plastic groves
*iron insole boots (to prevent you from getting hurt from nails)
*working cloths (thick and long sleeves)
*rain coat
These are shops I know.

<Transportation>
Take night bus at 11:30pm of 10th from Shinjuku to Ichinoseki. It's just 3,800yen. http://www.bus-ichiba.jp/schedule/cat585/down/ We will arrive at Ichinoseki at 7am on the following day and rent a car at 8am. We will arrive at volunteer center at 10am.
On 12th, we will drive back to Ichinoseki then take shinkansen, since now JR is offering special ticket and shinkansen from Ichinoseki to Tokyo is just 5,900yen. We are supposed to arrive at Tokyo at 10 or 11pm. Total cost will be around 15,000 yen per person.
I'm waiting for drivers and many participants

There is a problem with the camper van if it is by Ervin he does 'for-profit' events in this van. This is not cost price - if his van has several people in it, he is making a good profit out of all the kind people who are volunteering. If this is Ervin - as shown on the Facebook page for this event, please do not use his van. He has tried posting similar 'for-profit' events on other websites and OCJ message board in the early days. He runs commercial tours with the van for similar prices. 10,000en or more with 8 people in the van is not volunteer. Andy
