Title & Date: June 27th Sat: Okutama Easy Hike & Cave, Hydrangea Park (あじさい) & Fireflies (ホタル)

Nozomi will coordinate group on the day and collect OCJ event contribution. Other people can help by watching the end of the group while walking.

Intro
Great combination of Hydrangea in full bloom (large park), then easy (beginner) hike along mountain ridge, a small cave (easy walk inside), ... finally fireflies along the river.

1. Minamisawa Hydrangea Mountain - 南沢あじさい山

2. Small Cave

The cave is on a hiking trail about 100m below the ridge. On the ridge there are also some rocks.
It is a small cave (just walk in for 10 minutes) Yozawa Limestone Cave (養沢鍾乳洞)
No special equipment needed - take a light. There are a couple of ladders inside but optional. No crawling or climbing,

3. Fireflies (ホタル)
Many places to see from around 8pm-9pm peak time. Yozawa river (養沢川) area and around Tokuu-in temple (徳雲院).
Due to typhoon last year it may not be as good as usual.

Route

Due to groups size it is better to walk from the station.

Start Musashi Itsukaichi Station - (walk 40 minutes to) - Hydrangea Garden. Allow 1 hour ( or less) there then start hiking - (2-3 hours to ridge above cave) - Mountain Ridge. Can stop at some rocks on the ridge for a break, food, views. Maybe Kuromo-iwa is worth stopping at.Then down path - (20 minutes to) - Cave. Inside cave about 10 minutes ok. Down path - (30 minutes to ) - Yozawa road. Can use toilet there and get water. Take a rest.
It is maybe less than 1km to Kami-yozawa bus stop if you need it.

OPTION

SUNSET is around 7pm so fireflies best by around 8pm.

For fireflies you can continue walking down the Yozawa road (7km) or take the bus back down from Kami-yozawa - go shopping for food etc and do firefly walk around the south end of Yozawa valley.
I think best to rest around Kami-yozawa and walk down the road for firefly viewing after 7pm. Ask local farmers for best spot and time. Usually 8-9pm best.
At the end you can take a bus at the main road to the station or walk it.

Event Grade (イベント等級)
viewtopic.php?f=76&t=3451

Hiking is Fitness Grade 2 - Easy, Technical 2 EASY - Beginner (初心者)
If you add walking down the road at Yozawa it is about Fitness grade 3 - Moderate. But less than 50% is actual hiking trail.
The caves has a couple of places where you need to use hands or a ladder. This would be 'Technical 3 MODERATE - Above Beginner' but the cave is only about 10 minutes and optional.

Hi, long time no see. This is Takashi Kanazashi, a marathon runner and triathlete.
Under the state of coronavirus emergency, I refrained from going out, but not any more.
I'm very much interested in hiking and visiting the caves in Okutama on Sat. 27.
Is it true that anyone can join? Even beginners like me?
If so, I'll get ready for the trip.

Welcome Ping, Karthik and Takashi.
