Sat. Oct 10 (Day Trip): Nagatoro 長瀞, Spider Lillies, Riverside Picnic

Post by Adam »

Update 2:

The forecast has not improved much. We are expected to get over 100mm of rain in the next 24-hours. I think I will stay home and work on some Dutch oven recipes to share on future trips.

I'm sorry, but I am going to cancel plan B as well. It's just too much rain.

If anyone is interested in Dutch ovens, I am going to practice at my apartment in Asaka, Saitama tomorrow. You are welcome to come over and bake your own loaf of bread with my ingredients and supplies. I have a large balcony and tatami room. I will warn you, I am still just a beginner, so my bread recipe needs a lot of work. I'm hoping that maybe someone can teach me something. I am also planning an apple cobbler dessert. And mulled wine will be on the house! (free)

Dutch oven practice will start at 12:00, noon. If you have interest in this, please leave another message and I'll share my address with you. If not, then I'll look forward to the next opportunity. Stay warm everyone!

Attending (12): Karthik, Hiro, Yuki, Kushal, Mami, Asa, Hiro, Becca, Makiko, Tammy, AB, myself

Introduction:

Day trip with about 3 to 4 hours of flat, easy walking along a scenic river promenade, followed by a DIY riverside picnic.

Nagatoro-machi in Saitama is a well-developed tourist town with many attractions (fancy campgrounds, boat tours, museums, hotels, and more) all staged around the 1.5km gorge section of the Arakawa River and its foliated rock walls. All of the development around the water reminds me little of my hometown near Niagara Falls. Half of the day will be easy, flat walking, and the other half will be relaxing on a sunny spot next to the river. We can get our picnic supplies at a supermarket, so we can keep our bags light during the walk.

Trip Summary:

We'll meet at Nagataro Station at 10:00 (2:30 travel time from Shinjuku). We'll walk along a secret railroad path to the beginning of the promenade trail near Kami Nagatoro Station. The promenade trail is flat and scenic, and we can go down close to the water at some places. There should be a lot to see and explore along the trail, so I have allowed extra time for us to enjoy it. After soaking in all the scenery along the promenade we'll head downstream for the second half of our day (picnic). I have researched a few choice looking spots to establish our picnic (see map). If we chose one of the downstream locations we can hop on the train or walk to Nogami Station to a supermarket. From the supermarket, it's about a 10 minute walk to the river. We can relax by the river for the rest of the day, hopefully in full sunlight.

Schedule:

10:00 - Meet at Nagatoro Station
1:00 - finish Promenade Trail
2:00 - picnic
5:30 - head home

D is a nice spot - riverside area but near rocks and behind there is the maple (momiji) tree park with toilets and water.

Sounds like a good hot spiced wine opportunity.

We are currently 5 on this trip and happily welcome more.

Spiced wine sounds nice to me. I can arrange that. Hiro and Yuki, if you don't drink wine please let me know and I won't bring so much. If you do drink wine, you don't have to respond, I'll bring the right amount. I already have a rough idea of how much Karthik and Kushal drink, as we've been on several trips together already.

Let's plan to eat at site D. This means no supermarket, so everyone will need bring their picnic food from home or get what they need from the 7Eleven near Nagatoro station.

If we feel like walking more, we may go to site A, which also has toilets as well as some cool rock formations and deep pools.

Hello Becca, you are welcome to join. However, Makiko still needs to register for OCJ and leave message at the bottom of this post. It's our rule and helps us organizers make our events run super smooth. Once she signs up, she is good to go!

For all members attending this event. Please bring food for the picnic. We will most likely not be stopping at a supermarket (unless we decide we want to see more, and picnic at site A). There is a 7-Eleven near Nagatoro Station, so we may stop there before the picnic if necessary.

Here is a summary of the current plan. Meet at Nagatoro Station at 10am. Then, walk south, on a hidden railroad path to Kami-Nagataro Station. From Kami-Nagataro we can have a look at picnic site D and see what it's like, and other spots as well. After visiting site D, we'll walk north along the promenade and back towards Nagatoro Station. That will complete the loop, and should only takes a couple of hours. We can decide to continue north to Nogami station, the supermarket, and picnic site A, or, we can go back to site D (hitting 7-Eleven along the way if necessary) and begin our picnic. Both picnic sites are close to toilets and a train station. We should have enough time to enjoy the area at a leisurely pace.

Update

I see a typhoon is moving towards Kyushu now and may be just off the coast of Tokyo by this weekend. If the forecast does what it says it will do, the rain will start Saturday afternoon and continue all day Sunday. If this is the case, I will cancel our Nagatoro plan since I don't think it will be worth it.

Still, the forecast can change, and for now, we'll stick with the original plan.

Plan B We can to head to Kamanofuchi Park (釜の淵公園), a 15 minute walk from Ome Station. The park has a couple of shelters and toilets we can use, or, if it's not too windy, I'd like to set up my shelters at a spot with a view of the river. I will bring along a Dutch oven and charcoals so we can make some fresh bread with butter and a hot apple crisp dessert. If we use my shelters no one will bother us about the charcoal.

And don't worry, I have not forgotten about the mulled wine! Speaking of which, if you don't drink at all, please say so and I will plan accordingly. If you think you will have some then you don't need to say anything, I'll count you in on the wine (I ask 300yen for wine).

Below are a few photos of Kamanofuchi.

Alright! I'll need a head kneader. If you want, you can grab some cheese. It will pair well with bread and wine. As well as some rainy day jazz on the radio.
