Great trip in winter as the water speed slows and large pools (25x25m) become hot onsen. Places where it is deep enough to swim and water is chest high deep. Beautiful clear green colour. We go in the river in the afternoon, night, early morning.
It is not a day trip due to travel time. With winter camp gear (sleeping bag -10C, mat survival bag) it is possible to stay near the hot river (secret private location). You are not allowed to stay overnight at the onsen river.
Also possible with car or taxi share to go to Kusatsu and get cheap rooms for around 4,000yen but you can't do the night onsen and swim. Lots of free onsen places there and good for snowshoe of ski.
Near the hot river onsen are several interesting hiking trails to frozen waterfalls.
