Discussion - October Autumn Events - Nikko Etc

Post by Andy OCJ »

Not sure what the dates will be but traditionally the middle of October has good autumn colours in the Nikko area - higher up and colder spots.
11th and 12th might be a bit early except for mountain peaks and Maru Numa / Sengen Numa lakes.

I guess the 18th and 19th will be good at Chuzenjiko altitude and Okukinu hot springs.
There is an interesting old packhorse route over the mountain from the Nikko side to Okukinu Kawamata. Also a free lodge near the start making it a comfortable weekend hike with overnight at the lodge. It is quite an easy route but long.

I had planned a wilder route from the Nikko side to the wild hot spring in Okukinu on an old forest workers trail. Camp near free hot springs and make your own bath. This is a tougher trip.

These are ideas...! Members can lead trips and I can offer help with organisation if you ask.
Not sure if I can make it to Japan then but a chance I can get there for November maybe. If I can't then it will probably be April - May in 2026.
If I get there then there will be weekly events to great places, weather permitting.

There is lots of information in old events for people to plan new events.

News topics suggest temperatures are a bit high going into October and autumn colours probably delayed by up to 10 days.
Hard to say yet which weekend will have peak colours. If temperatures don't drop quickly it wont be a good year but we will have to wait for updates later on.

Wild onsen on wild (old) route from Nikko side.
Forest road walk to old gold mine then from near there up the mountain and around traversing, Down to river near famous sulphur vent and on hiking path to free wild hot spring. Rarely travelled route.
