August: Cool Weather, Wild Camp, Fire, River Swim, Great Scenery

Post by Andy OCJ »

Anyone for a fantastic location for a break from Tokyo heat?
  • Elevation is around 900 to 1000m so cooler there.
Easy walk in on forest track so beginners ok. Further up the trail is above beginner but easy for most people.
Wild camp is no problem and fire at night ok if desired.
Good pools to swim in and 100% pre clean water.
Towering rock gorge scenery and great star viewing location.
Lots of wild animals here. You will almost certainly see foxes, deer, monkeys.

Best for 3 days but 2 days still good. If 3 days there is an extra idea to add on a hike up to Chuzenji lake and return via Nikko. Also an interesting copper mine museum.

If several interested and willing to meet up, walk together, and support the club - collect organisation
fee and send then I can plan details.

Travel cost and time varies depending on the route. Cheapest using Tobu line but there are combinations to get to Ashio Matou station. Oneway from around 3,600 yen and between 2 hours 30 minutes and 3 hours 30 minutes. It is worth it.

Date is to be decided... with only 1 person it is not enough to spend hours planning and making map details.

Hopefully more will reply. You could volunteer to lead the trip and follow supplied map details - it is an easy one. Also collect and send the club donation to pay website cost (via PayPal). With someone volunteering to meet the group it is more likely people will reply.

Any weekend is ok but one with no rain forecast! In summer in Japan that is not as easy as it sounds - the weather is less predictable than you think, especially in the mountains. Typhoons tracks cannot be predicted well more than a week in advance. If decided 2-4 weeks in advance I would guess there is more than 50% chance of bad weather and cancellation. Plan a week in advance and the chance of success is much higher.

This weekend looks better than a week later but rain time Sunday is uncertain. Saturday looks good for a camp.

Typical Japanese summer .... planning events will need to be a few days before the weekend to get the best forecast for sun/rain, and to dodge the typhoons.

Not looking good at the moment. Hope you are all looking forward to some great autumn weekend trips that are planned.

I'm new to the group, but would definitely be interested if the weather is in our favor.
